In Re: Zero, Subaru gets transported to another world. Here are the 5 best & 5 worst things to happen to him in the show so far.
Subaru is the lead character of the popular anime series Re: Zero. Despite being sent to a parallel world, he isn’t the overpowered hero the viewers were used to. In fact, Subaru isn’t really strong at all, and the anime focuses on his suffering.
The series shows Subaru being killed in several horrible ways, and even watching the characters he slowly grows attached to being killed in front of his eyes. The dark isekai does give Subaru a few wins though. Below are five of the best things that happened to Subaru and the five worst things that happened to him.
10. Best: Getting Teleported To Another World
Subaru didn’t live a fulfilling life on Earth, he was a shut-in with no love interest or friends. Being teleported into another world helped get him moving around more and helped him encounter Emilia, the girl of his dreams, or who he at least thinks he will be able to date.
Subaru is much better off in another world since he wasn’t really doing anything on Earth.
9. Worst: Being Murdered
Subaru is forced into a destiny of being murdered over and over again by various means. From being crushed by a mace to being disemboweled, Subaru has it pretty rough. The worst part is that he can vividly remember each time he is killed, and he feels pain until the moment of death.
Unluckily for Subaru, he soon finds out there are things much worse than being killed by random enemies.
8. Best: Return By Death
To be completely honest, even if Subaru didn’t get involved with Emilia, he would probably still be killed by his lack of knowledge about his new world. Return by death may seem like a curse at first, but it is actually an incredibly powerful ability that he learns to use.
By using his ability, Subaru can theoretically keep dying until he gets the reality he desires.
7. Worst: Rem Attacking
Once Subaru finally gets cozied into Roswaal’s mansion, he meets Rem and Ram, who can smell the scent of the witch on him. This soon leads to Rem killing him in a brutal way, forcing him to find a way to gain her trust before he is murdered again.
Every time she kills him, he is also forced to awaken to her and Ram standing over his bed.
6. Best: Meeting Rem
While they may not have initially got along that well (she did kill him after all), one of the best things that could have happened to Subaru is meeting Rem. Not only does Rem fall in love with him, but she is willing to fight for him and even die if it means she saves his life.
Friends like that are pretty hard to find, and fans aren’t sure that Subaru even deserves Rem.
5. Worst: Killing Emilia
Later in the first season, Subaru decides to come clean to Emilia about his power. When he finally tells her that he can return by death, time slows, and she is killed. Subaru is stuck holding her dead body in his arms until he is murdered by the witch’s cult.
From that point on, Subaru is forced to keep his ability a secret.
4. Best: Roswaal Taking Him In
Roswaal was pretty gracious about taking in Subaru, who was homeless. While Subaru did agree to be a butler, he is treated with tons of respect, gets his own room, and is fed rather well.
Subaru seems to get some of the best accommodations possible by befriending Emilia. He is honestly lucky that he was able to find a place to live in such a short amount of time.
3. Worst: Fighting Sloth
Fighting Sloth is far from a pleasant experience for Subaru. Betelgeuse kidnaps Subaru and chains him to a wall. When Rem comes to save him, Subaru is forced to watch as she is brutally tortured in front of him. This is probably one of the most graphic parts of the anime.
2. Best: Getting Patrasche
Despite having no money, Subaru actually ends up with his own mount named Patrasche. Patrasche is willing to try and protect Subaru and seems to be particularly fond of him, despite their short relationship.
Subaru has a mansion to rest in, two women who love him, and a loving mount to travel on, which is a stark contrast to his former life.
1. Worst: Not Being Able To Save Rem
Subaru has to see Rem die or being forgotten several times in the series. Watching Rem die is one of the things that leads Subaru to go to drastic measures in order to try and save her. It is shown that watching her be killed over and over again starts to break him down mentally.
He even offers to take Rem and run away from all the action in one of his weakest moments in the show.
