JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor is a video game endeavor that many fans of the anime don’t know much about…
There are many crazy anime series that have made their mark on the industry, but JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is definitely one of the most ambitious and ridiculous series that is out there. The JoJo franchise tells a story of good versus evil that spans generations and throws unbelievable super powers into the mix.
This feels like a given for video games and there have been some entertaining titles that dig into the expansive lore of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. One of the most recent endeavors in the area is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor, which is a JoJo title that mainstream audiences might not know a lot about.
10. It’s An Arcade-Only Exclusive
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has had a rich history with video game adaptations. JoJo games have been coming out for decades and have been featured on everything from the SNES to current gen consoles. There’s clearly an audience for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure titles on the console and they usually lead to some heightened fighting games.
However, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor is a chaotic battle royale fighter that’s only available as an arcade cabinet. Last Survivor has been a hit in arcades, but at this point it seems unlikely that it’s going to receive a port for consoles.
9. It Covers Parts 3, 4, And 5 From The Series
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has been running for decades and over time it’s been able to deliver several different parts. Each part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure tells a story that’s both connected to a larger narrative, but also stands on its own. This wide berth of content means that JoJo video games have a lot to pull from and sometimes they chronicle the entire series and others just narrow down on a single part.
Last Survivor features characters from Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, and Golden Wind, which are the three most recent stories when it comes to the anime adaptations.
8. The Trademark JoJo Poses Are Present
There are lots of reasons to love JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and it’s a series that ambitiously pushes itself in every department. As far as shonen anime are concerned there are plenty of amazing fights in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but this series also excels in areas that have nothing to do with action. In fact, style and fashion are as important to the JoJo series as super powers and muscles are. Last Survivor lets the characters in the game engage in stylish and elaborate poses, either as a sign of victory or a means of intimidation. Last Survivor understands its importance.
7. There Are Over 10 Playable Characters
The enjoyment in any JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game is going to come down to which characters it features. Parts 3, 4, and 5 of the series have literally hundreds of potential warriors, but Last Survivor makes some solid decisions. Jotaro, Josuke, and Giorno lead the way, but it’s nice to have others liek Polnareff, Koichi, and Bruno also available. It’s actually a little impressive that the game includes some villains and supporting characters as well, like Hol Horse from Stardust Crusaders or Rohan Kishibe from Diamond is Unbreakable. They’re not the typical characters to be included.
6. Characters Can Level Up
Arcade titles are definitely capable of providing gamers with deep experiences, but the expectation for many is that they’re more of a burst of gaming than a lengthy title. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor attempts to buck that trend with how it features a leveling up system that adds to the game’s depth and encourages longer gameplay. The leveling system works by collecting poker chips from fallen enemies. The higher that a character’s level is allows their Stand to improve and learn more abilities. For instance, at Level 4 Jotaro learns how to use Star Platinum The World’s Time Stop.
5. It Hasn’t Been Released Outside Of Japan
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is an anime series that distinctly feels Japanese, so it’s understandable that the series has taken some time to catch on outside of Japan. However, the series has found a devoted fan base and airing on Adult Swim’s Toonami block has done the franchise a lot of favors. That being said, the majority of JoJo video games don’t get released outside of Japan, with All Star Battle being a rare exception. Unfortunately, Last Survivor doesn’t break this trend and it seems unlikely that it will ever come overseas.
4. Up To 20 Players Can Fight At Once
Arcade video game experiences are so enjoyable because of the sense of community that they build. It doesn’t matter whether gamers know the players that they’re working alongside or they’re complete strangers and that’s why arcades still have such a power to them. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure tries to push this concept to the extreme. The title has 11 possible playable characters, but actually 20 people can play at once. This makes the battle royale game even more enjoyable and crazy when so many people can jump in on the action.
3. Different Stands Have Different Charges As A Balancing System
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a series that features incredible super powers in the form of Stands. Stands are amazing to watch, but they’re so strong it makes sense to add some restrictions to them in video games. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor tries to remedy this with how each Stand needs to charge at different points after a certain amount of energy is consumed. For example, Jotario is able to consecutively punch up to eight times with his Star Platinum stand before he then needs to stop and charge to regain his strength.
2. Supporting Character Daniel J. D’Arby Plays An Important Role
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a series that is filled with unforgettable characters that aren’t just exaggerated personalities, but also often have equally ridiculous names, fashion senses, and Stand abilities. Daniel J D’Arby is a Stardust Crusaders villain and member of the Egypt 9 who uses gambling to manipulate his opponents. Last Survivor implements the poker chip aspect of D’Arby’s Osiris Stand and turns it into an in-game currency of sorts. There are plenty of angles that this could have gone, so to use D’Arby as the linchpin to it all is very interesting .
1. Jotaro And DIO’s Time Stop Length Can Be Increased
All of the playable characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor are entertaining in their own ways, but Jotaro and DIO, who can easily overpower the other characters. Last Survivor allows players to upgrade their Stands as their level up, but this is most advantageous for Jotaro and DIO since it lets them extend the length of their Time Stop Stand abilities. Stopping time for any length of time is an easy way to get the upper hand, but with Jotaro and DIO it’s a fun nod to the climax of their battle as they push their powers further.
