By now everyone’s familiar with Black Clover, as it’s supposedly the “King of Shonen” as Crunchyroll once referred to it. The series follows the story of Asta, a young boy aiming to be the Wizard King…though he has no magic powers. Asta gets tossed into a Magic Knight guild though, and thanks to his ability to summon weapons that can cancel out magic energy, he winds up becoming one of the most powerful characters in the Clover Kingdom.
But what of the guild Asta is a member of? The Black Bulls are a strange organization that had no problem accepting a young boy who seemed to have no magic powers at all. It’s made up of an eclectic cast that also happens to be some of the most endearing heroes in anime today, and this list examines everything that only true fans are aware of about them.
10. Selected on purpose
Every member of the Black Bulls was hand-picked by their illustrious captain Yami. And while this is to be expected of every Magic Knight Captain, with Yami things are a bit different.
He doesn’t just go to Magic Knight Exams to draft students—he’ll pick up people he meets off the street, purely because he likes their attitude. It’s suggested that this was the intent behind Yami getting his own guild—Julius wanted to see if they could recruit mages that might be missed otherwise by the annual Magic Knight exams.
9. Didn’t understand what ranks were
The Magic Knight system is actually quite rigid, with a ton of ranks from Captain to Vice-Captain and on down.
This is something that isn’t mentioned very often in the anime, but when Asta and a few of the other Black Bulls are up for a promotion, that’s when we learn something about them: very few of them have any clue that ranks exist in the first place. Everyone is treated exactly the same.
8. Asta helped them become awesome
Before Asta arrived, the Black Bulls had gained a reputation for being the worst guild. All guilds get ranked based on a star system, but as it turns out the Black Bulls were actually behind by a negative star count when the series began.
It’s only through working with Asta that they’re constantly thrown into unique missions that lead to the team getting showered in stars, such that the group climbs their way up to second place.
7. A mobile castle
Because of Henry’s power of recombination, the Black Bulls are capable of going to new locations whenever they please. The castle initially starts out located near the Common Region of the Clover Kingdom, making them the guild closest to the actual common people.
But eventually, their mission from Julius causes them to switch locations to just outside of the Spade Kingdom. Bringing a little bit of home with them where ever they go appears to be the way of the Black Bulls.
6. The castle is constantly changing
Thanks to the presence of Henry, the shape of the castle is constantly changing. His recombination magic means the actual layout of the Black Bulls’ castle is completely unknowable.
This can be a problem in some instances, but Henry’s connection to the castle also means it can be rebuilt even if it’s completely destroyed in a run-in with someone during a battle.
5. Black Clover vice captain is mystery
A fascinating interview with Yuki Tabata with VIZ Media in 2017 explained that there’s a reason we don’t know who the Black Bulls’ second-in-command was. It isn’t that Yami doesn’t have one, it’s that the character hasn’t been revealed yet.
While Zora has made a pretty impressive Magic Knight, it doesn’t seem to be him, and it obviously isn’t Asta so even years later we have a major character that we’ve never seen in the anime.
4. Helps regular people
Of all the members of the Magic Knights, the Black Bulls seem to be the best suited to protect the commoners. Most of the other Magic Knights are obsessed with being as close to royalty as possible.
They don’t consider the other citizens of Clover Kingdom actually worth saving, and as a result, it’s usually the Black Bulls we see putting in work to aid those poor individuals who can’t defend themselves.
3. Closer to a family
Perhaps more than all the other guilds, this group operates more like a family than anything else. The group looks out for one another, rather than enforcing rigid military-like rules and structure.
This is why when Noelle reveals she can’t control her magic, Vanessa is one of the first people there to try and help her improve. This is what leads all of them to try and improve all the time.
2. Combat mode
Something shown off during the Black Bulls’ battle against the Eye of the Midnight Sun is that not only can the castle constantly change shape, but it can also transform into a giant robot.
The castle has two completely different levels to it-first is the combat style, where the house stands on two legs and actually fights, firing off mana energy from its hands. Then it can also transform into a bull.
1. The smallest guilt
The Black Bulls are probably the smallest squad in the entire anime. While other squads have displayed having lower-ranked members that usually find themselves going and retrieving things for the people who are more powerful than they are, this isn’t shown with the Black Bulls.
Because Yami slowly grows his group, there’s no need to have a bunch of people who either can’t fight or take the role of being glorified gofers for the group.
