Dragon Ball is an action anime that’s connected with audiences for a lot of reasons. The anime features lovable characters, thrilling action sequences, and stunning transformations & displays of power. However, a lot of the fighting in the series revolves around the titular Dragon Balls. These magical orbs can grant whoever finds them almost anything they wish.
This understandably causes a lot of conflict in the anime and the special orbs have evolved in various ways across the series. The wishes from these Dragon Balls cover all sorts of territory, yet some of them are more practical than others, while other brilliant wishes never get a chance to come to fruition.
10. Dumbest: Oolong Wishes For Underwear
One of the biggest moments in the earliest episodes of the original Dragon Ball anime is when the Dragon Balls are first finally assembled and a wish actually gets to happen. This event plays with expectations and just when it seems like the evil Emperor Pilaf is going to achieve his dreams of domination, Oolong intervenes with an improvised wish.
Granted, Oolong perhaps shouldn’t be judged for his quick thinking and he does still technically save the day, but his impulse decision for women’s underwear is an incredible waste of Shenron’s abilities.
9. Would’ve Been More Useful: Oolong Wishes For A Wife
Oolong’s brash decision in the original Dragon Ball earns him a pair of lady’s underwear. What’s really important here is that Oolong’s wish prevents Pilaf from making his come true, but Oolong ditches the underwear right after he gets it. Making a wish that has some permanent value would have been much smarter here and there are things he could ask for that still hit the same bases.
Shenron has made strange creations before so willing a wife into existence for Oolong wouldn’t be beyond his capabilities and would give Oolong a partner.
8. Dumbest: Mai Wishes For The World’s Best Ice Cream
Dragon Ball Super brings Pilaf and his mischievous gang of Mai and Shu back into the picture. They’re typically used for comic relief, but they’re still an entertaining addition that wind up with the Dragon Balls more often than one would expect. To reflect the shortsighted nature of these characters, Mai makes a wish for the world’s best ice cream. Shu also wishes for one million zeni, both of which don’t get them very far. Mai seems satisfied in the moment, but it’s such an impulsive wish and it reflects the bare minimum of what Shenron can accomplish.
7. Would’ve Been More Useful: Mai Wishes To Own The World’s Best Ice Cream Factory
Mai’s wish in Dragon Ball Super for some delicious ice cream is satisfying in the moment, but it’s only a matter of time until she’s back to where she was before. Shenron can make such amazing things possible that there are much smarter approaches to Mai’s thinking. For instance, she could wish to be the owner of the world’s best ice cream factory, which would not only give her an unlimited supply of what she wants, but she’d also makes a profit, which appeases Shu’s wish as well.
6. Dumbest: Pilaf Wishes For Goku To Be Turned Into A Child
Dragon Ball GT is a controversial series among anime fans and the entire premise is predicated on a wish that Pilaf makes that goes wildly out of control. Goku once again crashes Pilaf’s attempt to summon Shenron, but this interruption causes Pilaf to flippantly wish for Goku to be turned into a kid. This is certainly a nuisance for Goku, but he’s still incredibly powerful and isn’t that greatly hindered when it comes to his transformations. He’s still wildly more powerful than Pilaf and the change in character design has found a lot of fans over time.
5. Would’ve Been More Useful: Pilaf Wishes For Goku To Be A Baby
Granted, Pilaf’s wish to turn Goku into a child is done in haste, but putting that aside there are still creative ways in which this idea would have actually accomplished what Pilaf was after. Goku can still turn into a Super Saiyan and wield powerful attacks as a youth, but if Pilaf went one step further and wished for him to be a baby then he’d actually have him beat. Goku wouldn’t be able to get the upper hand in battle and Pilaf could operate without interruption.
4. Dumbest: Lord Slug Wishes For Eternal Youth
The Dragon Ball Z movies are very formulaic, but they still are entertaining extra doses of action and some of the films push creative ideas or introduce characters that are able to stick, like Broly. Lord Slug isn’t the most popular villain, but it’s exciting for Dragon Ball to bring an evil Namekian into the fray. Lord Slug wishes for eternal youth, which gives him a hearty boost in energy, but it’s still ultimately futile because Goku annihilates him by the end of their fight.
3. Would’ve Been More Useful: Lord Slug Wishes For Immortality
Lord Slug isn’t the most entertaining Dragon Ball Z movie and Lord Slug’s wish for youth is especially disheartening since it’s just a retread of what King Piccolo did in the original Dragon Ball. Rather than wish for youth, Lord Slug could have just wished to become immortal. This too may seem like a cliché villain wish in some respects, but it at least would have ensured Slug’s survival. Goku’s strength was still growing at this point, so it’s possible this immortality could have eventually led to Lord Slug’s dominance.
2. Dumbest: Baby Wishes For A New Planet Tuffle
Dragon Ball GT is a very mixed bag, but many consider the Baby Vegeta episodes to be some of the best due to how they get Vegeta and Goku squaring off against each once more. Baby is a dangerous parasite that calls back to the Saiyans’ roots and their tumultuous relationship with the Tuffles. In an effort to level the playing field, Baby Vegeta uses the Dragon Balls to wish for a new Planet Tuffle to appear in Earth’s solar system. It’s an admirable wish, but it’s an empty planet and more of a symbol than practical.
1. Would’ve Been More Useful: Baby Wishes For All Saiyans To Become Tuffles
In the ultimate effort to reclaim his annihilated race’s glory, Baby wishes for his dead planet to be resurrected so he can make a fresh start. This is a touching symbolic gesture, but this new planet doesn’t get Baby anywhere. It’s a fun environment for a battle, but it’s not populated. A smarter wish would be for Baby to get rid of the middleman entirely here and just wish for all Saiyans to become Tuffles. This achieves Baby’s goal in a more efficient way and it would actually turn Goku and Vegeta into allies rather than needing to infect them.
