The characters in Hunter x Hunter are neither simple nor small in number. Far from making it convoluted, however, these characters are designed with specific roles in mind — they take up the spaces assigned to them, and work their stories out within a set number of chapters or episodes (like Chrollo or Meruem, for example.)
However, since the series still has a lot of terrain to cover, a few characters tend to pop in and out of the story when the narrative demands. There are a few ways to comprehend the assorted identities present in Hunter x Hunter: one of them is via Zodiac Sign classification.
12. Aries – Meruem
As the single most powerful creature in the world (excluding the Dark Continent), Meruem is burdened by his strength as much as he is resolved to remake the world in his own image.
These traits are all definitively part of the Aries sign, including his inability to control his temper, for instance, when he punishes Neferpitou and Shaiapouf for minor offenses. Meruem’s confidence in his invulnerability rarely fails to bear fruit, but his impulsive actions against Netero lead him to finally dying (through poisoning.)
11. Taurus – Biscuit Krueger
Biscuit is a very powerful Hunter, being old enough to train the likes of Wing (who subsequently teaches Gon and Killua.) As a Taurus, she doesn’t fool around with respect to battle, making it very clear to both Gon and Killua that they will die if they cannot prove themselves to her.
Biscuit’s focus on her appearance stems from a rigid definition of what femininity is meant to look like, stubbornly insisting on altering her allegedly hideous form into the kawaii one she usually dons.
10. Gemini – Ging Freecss
Ging is a classic Gemini, exhibiting the binary personality of the sign to its fullest extent. On the one hand, he is a renowned Hunter, idolized for his incredible achievements, while on the other, he is an absent father who forces Mito into taking full custody of his son, Gon.
Ging has a generally relaxed outlook towards life, choosing to shunt aside unnecessary conflict in favor of discussion. He does show some responsibility to the Hunter Association at least, when he makes sure that the previous Chairman’s intentions are respected.
9. Cancer – Neferpitou
Neferpitou’s chief trait, one they promote at the cost of everything else, is their rabid devotion to their lord and master, Meruem. As a Cancer, they is deeply involved in family life (which consists only of the King and the other two Royal Guards.)
Being a cat-based Chimera Ant, Neferpitou’s level of intuition, or En, is ridiculously powerful, given that they is able to sense Netero and Zeno floating in the clouds miles above the palace. This spiritual hypersensitivity is yet another feature of the Cancer sign.
8. Leo – Isaac Netero
Netero is the embodiment of the Badass Grandpa trope usually located in shounen stories. But he was badass when he was younger as well — a true Leo who demands, not expects, leadership of his previous dojo from the incumbent Grandmaster.
Some might consider this a sign of vanity, but a lion always gets what they deserve. Netero leads the Hunter Association with the full awareness that he might need to make some tough calls during his tenure (potentially involving mass murder.)
7. Virgo – Hisoka Morow
The Virgo is best known for their analytical genius, which allows them to become extremely proficient at manipulation. In fact, their brand of influence is rather secretive: by creating a curtain of emotional distance against others.
Hisoka is an exquisite example, seeing as his ambitions are a mystery but the path towards them is paved with anyone he deems fit to utilize. His strict perfectionism reflects that of the Virgo, especially in the sheer versatility of his Bungee Gum technique.
6. Libra – Gon Freecss
Gon is like his father in terms of having a dual nature, flipping between adorable darling and destructive beast. Unlike Ging, though, his Libra persona lets him balance these psychological tones (with the occasional lapse: the fight with Neferpitou, for instance.)
Gon is not just smart; there seems to be no upper limit to how much he can learn — if there is a new technique or ability available to him, he masters it at a terrifying pace.
5. Scorpio – Killua Zoldyck
Killua is Gon’s best friend, but their personalities are practically reflections of each other. He is temperamental, moody, quick to violence: all definitive traits of the Scorpio.
Blessed with immense power (courtesy Zoldyck genetics), Killua tends to impulsively react to any given situation, which may not always end in success. He fails the first Hunter exam by “accidentally” killing Bodoro, and passes the second time by effortlessly beating 1,488 applicants to become the only candidate that year.
4. Sagittarius – Palm Siberia
Palm Siberia is considerably intelligent, as most people born with the blessings of Sagittarius often are. However, this demeanor of hers is only revealed when Killua manages to separate the Ant-like aggression from her body (a result of her conversion surgery.)
Palm does not like it when things don’t go her way, for instance, when Knov does not reciprocate her romantic interest, she moves her sights towards Gon. She experiences a complex set of emotions, especially after her transformation, rapidly flipping between intense glee and soul-crushing sadness.
3. Capricorn – Kurapika
Though he spends half his life seeking blood revenge against the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika is actually quite a nice guy — he feels deeply protective of and protected by his close friends.
As a Capricorn, he sees his destiny laid out for him as clear as day, and does everything in his power to ensure the success of his plans. A specific trait of this sign that manifests in Kurapika is his mercilessness, specifically when it comes to Chrollo Lucilfer and his rag-tag team of murderous scum.
2. Aquarius – Komugi
Being an Aquarius, Komugi is far too ingenious to live life in service to stereotypes. In fact, her incredible knowledge of Gungi strategies allows her to consider the world and its inhabitants as players on a board game (as she half-explains to Meruem.)
Komugi exhibits no lack of skill, refusing to even draw a single game against the Ant-King, as she believes that her dignity and life depend on it. Her sense of empathy comes to the forefront at the end of her life, when she chooses to die along with Meruem rather than leave him alone.
1. Pisces – Melody
The only known Music Hunter, Melody is quiet and withdrawn as a general rule (not because she’s reticent, but because she’s always listening to the emotional states of those around her.)
The Pisces in her ensures that her moral rectitude never goes astray — her strident belief in the goodness of others helps Kurapika come out of his funk. Melody is a personification of the healing nature of her sign, displaying the ability to reduce negativity in people by simply playing her flute.
