JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of the most stylish, unique and abnormal anime/manga series out there. It’s featured countless emotional twists, comedic interactions and general weirdness that may catch even the most seasoned anime fan off guard. At the center of it all is the various stand abilities that drives the story forward.
Stands weren’t introduced until Stardust Crusaders, and even at that they weren’t completely fleshed out until Diamond is Unbreakable. Stand abilities have gotten to be more creative over time. But what’s most interesting is how absolutely bizarre some of them are. Though some are fairly straightforward, a lot of stands have some pretty distinctive abilities. That’s led to some pretty interesting characters and some even more mind-boggling abilities. Here are the strangest of the bunch.
Stray Cat kicks things off and in a really fitting way. Not only is this ability a little weird, but the stand itself as well. Stray Cat is a Stand/user hybrid of an actual stray cat that died shortly after it got hit with an Arrow.
When it was revived, it was bound to a nearby plant; thus its appearance. Its ability allows it to shoot out tiny compressed air pellets that can also act as a sort of shield as well. Due to it technically still being a cat, Stray Cat can be highly unpredictable in both its ability and mannerisms.
9. Notorious B.I.G.
Notorious B.I.G.’s stand ability seems like it comes straight out of a horror flick. Carne, the Stand User is killed off almost as quickly as he’s introduced and actually isn’t all that important to the stand itself. That’s because Notorious B.I.G. is most useful after its user has died.
Notorious B.I.G. only has its ability to activate following its user’s death. It chases down its opponents relentlessly and eats away at anyone who touches it. It’s basically a ballistic parasite.
8. The Grateful Dead
This next ability isn’t just weird, but pretty cruel as well. Grateful Dead isn’t the most imposing stand, but its ability is pretty frightening. Grateful Dead has that ability to make people age at an incredibly accelerated rate.
Its ability spreads via the mist and is reliant on body temperature. The higher someone’s body temperature, the quicker they age. This makes it incredibly difficult to deal with – especially given that most opponents won’t be able to figure out the abilities trigger in time.
This is a perfect example of a weird stand that still manages to have a pretty creative ability tied to it. Though not really suited for close combat situations, Enigma can really decimate its opponent – and it only takes a matter of seconds to do so.
Enigma’s ability revolves around being able to turn people and objects into pieces of paper. This is done by first assessing how the target acts when afraid, and then striking at the moment when they show those traits. The victim can be released, but only once their paper is unfolded.
6. Highway Star
While most stands tend to be close or mid-range abilities, Highway Star has much more reach and is able to be activated from pretty far away. Rather than rely on one ability, Highway Star has a number of characteristics that make it as dangerous as it is.
Its long-range and speed are perfect compliments to its ability. Highway Star lures victims into a room of its creation, and then once it has their scent chases them at a constant speed of 60 km/h. What’s worse is that it can absorb the life energy of anyone it touches, making it all the more important to outrun.
5. Cheap Trick
Cheap Trick really lives up to its name, and it’s one of the most unique and abnormal stands seen throughout the series. Unlike most stands, Cheap Trick can change users fairly simply, though its intentions in doing so are anything but good.
Cheap Trick works as a kind of disease, spreading from person to person. It attaches itself to someone’s back, and can only be seen by its user. From then on it wears its user out mentally and through its secondary ability communicates with all living creatures around it, with the intent of having someone look at its users back. Once that happens it leaves the user, killing them and moves on to whoever looked; repeating the process.
4. Beach Boy
Compared to some of the other stands on this list, Beach Boy may be a little underwhelming in terms of appearance. But its ability certainly justifies its place here. Beach Boy resembles a fishing rod and can move through solid objects, seeking out its prey.
Once “hooked” Beach Boy moves within its foe’s body – eventually shredding their heart. It’s incredibly difficult to defend against and can take out even the most skilled stand user as any damage done to its string will instead damage the hooked person.
3. Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is one of the few stands that take on multiple bodies instead of just one. In stark contrast to most of the stands discussed thus far, Pearl Jam is actually a pretty helpful stand – though the means in which it helps people can be misconstrued.
Pearl Jam is centered around cooking and through a mixture of food and its stand ability can cure illness. The way in which it heals people is pretty gruesome, as it pretty much gets rid of whatever is causing problems – which can lead to some pretty gory business. But everything always turns out ok shortly after.
2. Chariot Requiem
The first introduced Requiem Stand, Chariot Requiem leads a fairly oblivious existence, with its sole purpose being the protection of the Arrow. But its ability is pretty scary, given how chaotic it can be.
When activated, Chariot Requiem puts everyone around it asleep. The range of this is shown to be pretty big. It then switches out the soul of every life form with the nearest living organism. This is of course problematic for everyone affected but is made worse by its secondary ability that eventually turns all affected by the body switch to morph into weird, inhuman creatures.
1. Baby Face
This is it. The absolute weirdest stand ability in JoJo seen thus far. Baby Face isn’t the most imposing stand in the series and isn’t really suited for up close and personal combat. But what makes it notable is its ability to create homunculi.
These human-stand hybrids are created by choosing a subject followed by Baby face inseminating them shortly after. The whole process takes around three minutes, and once that’s complete, Baby Face can control the “Junior” stand from a pretty sizable distance.
