Avatar: the Last Airbender wrapped up after three seasons by having Zuko become the Fire Lord and Aang bring peace to the world. Even though the show was mostly over, there were a few story threads that still needed to be tied up. To do this, the show was turned into a comic series that helped tell the story of what happened to the characters after they beat Ozai.
If you ever wondered what happened to Azula or how Zuko did after his crowning, then keep reading below to find out. As it turns out, the comics actually contain many of the answers to popular questions fans have about the shows ending and the comics they can be found in.
10. Zuko And The Fire Nation (The Promise)
Zuko took the crown of the Fire Nation and promised to free the land that his country had taken over during the war. The comics heavily touch on Zuko’s struggle to be the new ruler and unravel the mess that his father and grandfather created.
Zuko does struggle with his new role but ultimately manages to help bring balance back to the world.
9. Fire Nation Colonies (The Promise)
Throughout the series, the characters encounter tons of Fire Nation colonies, and these colonies had both Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom citizens living in them. While a large majority of Fire Nation citizens returned to the homeland without a problem, some issues did arise.
The comics take a look at the colonies that had intermarried and started families together.
8. Azula’s Fate (Smoke And Shadow)
Azula is a character that many fans believed would be redeemed at some point in the series. In the comics, Azula is given several chances to help Zuko out and even restore her honor, but she rejects them every time and even kidnaps children.
The comics show once and for all that Azula is just as cruel as Ozai was.
7. Aang And Katara (The Promise)
Aang and Katara became a couple at the end of the show, and fans will be glad to know that they stayed together. The two get more relationship development in the comics and even share some sweet moments together.
If you want to see this couple grow even closer, then read some of the comic panels featuring them. The two are even questioned about their intentions for marriage in one of the later comics.
6. Ursa (The Search)
Ursa was Zuko and Azula’s mother, who ran away before the show began. The comics take Zuko and his sister on a quest to find their mother, who has begun a new life with a new family. The comics show Zuko dealing with this reality and coming to terms with her choice.
Zuko eventually brings his mother back to the capital and restarts their relationship. The comic also goes into detail about how Ursa married Ozai and about her new family, including her youngest child.
5. Air Acolytes (The Rift)
The Air Acolytes love the Airbending way, and the comics go deeper into their culture. The Air Acolytes slowly learn to be more like the air nomads and keep their various traditions alive much to Aang’s delight.
The Acolytes are the ones responsible for becoming Airbenders in the future.
4. Aang & Zuko’s Friendship (The Search)
Despite the rocky start, Aang and Zuko grow even closer in the comics. In fact, Team Avatar is constantly helping Zuko out with Fire Nation issues and even goes with him when he begins the search for his lost mother. Aang even regularly goes to visit Zuko on his own, leaving his other friends behind to do so.
Ursa also comments in the comics about how Zuko has made such good friends through the rest of the gang.
3. Southern Water Tribe (North And South Comic)
The Southern Water Tribe was in pretty rough shape at the beginning of the show. The comics show Katara and Sokka return to their home to find it has become a bustling city. The two are delighted to see how much their home has grown and even help with some political issues.
If you wanted to see the water family reunited, then this is a comic you need to read.
2. Toph’s Family (The Rift)
The comics even cover Toph’s family, who in the show were incredibly against the young girl being a bender. While her family is far from perfect, the comics give you more insight into their lives and just how her family is so prosperous. It also shows Toph being forced to actually confront her parents after running away from them.
1. Ozai’s Followers (Smoke And Shadow)
It’s not surprising to think that Ozai had a ton of followers. In the comics, a rebellious group that believed in Ozai’s cruel empire is out and about trying to help take the Fire Nation back over, and Azula is helping them. Zuko was tasked with finding and taking out the rebels.
The comic shows him having to make a tough call as Fire Lord and struggling to bring peace to his nation once more.
